(12/4/03)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

From a correspondent:

Most peoples of the world are not vegetarians (unfortunately). Why choose the phrase 'old Indian word'?

Things You Never Knew Existed...

Vegetarian Hunter T-Shirt Sand
Item No: 36189
Price: $16.98
Item is out of stock

Show your carniverous spirit with this 100% cotton t-shirt that defines "Vegetarian" as an "Old Indian Word for BAD HUNTER." Imported.

Rob's reply
Besides making fun of vegetarians, the shirt plays on the stereotypes of Indians as "old" (ancient, vanished) and hunters (primitives, savages). Centuries ago, Anglo-Saxon, Bantu, and Chinese people all hunted for food, but we've associated Indians so closely with the primitive hunter that this image predominates.

If you need to evoke a primitive hunter, you probably use a caveman with a club or an Indian with a bow and arrow. As far as our culture is concerned, they're about the same thing.
