Stereotype of the Month Entry
(11/3/03)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

Sir

On The Sports Network National Football League headline:
"Cowboys scalp 'Skins to maintain NFC East lead"

Sincerely

P.F.

Rob's comment
Often it's the other way around, with the "'Skins" scalping the Cowboys. That phrase suggests how vicious and ruthless the Indians supposedly were.

In reality, cowboys and other Anglos did scalp the Indians. But either way, this imagery suggests the Old West was home to savage warfare. Actually, many if not most Anglo/Indian relationships were benign, with the Indians helping their uninvited guests.
