Stereotype of the Month Entry
(10/21/00)

Another Stereotype of the Month entry:

Sitting Bull Energy Drink

Rob's comment
Equating Indians with power and vitality is common enough. Note all the cars, trucks, and vans named after Indians, as well as the revived Indian motorcycles. This is relatively benign as stereotypes go.

But this drink features a scowling blue-skinned Indian...with fiery red hair...in a Mohawk style that suggests a warrior. In reality, Sitting Bull was more of a spiritual leader than a fighting man, and of course he didn't have blue skin or a red Mohawk. This product combines a well-known Indian name with an unrelated, negative image to sell, sell, sell.
