Mark Twain, Indian Hater
(6/9/01)

Another response to Mark Twain, Indian Hater:

*****

Rob,

I've known for years that Twain wasn't too great with anyone that wasn't a white American (and he was pretty snippy with many of those too) but if you read some of his articles about the native Hawaiian folks when he was here you'll notice that he was very much a racist. Sure it was a part of the white American thinking of the time that they were better than all other races, but some of the garbage that came out of his mouth was downright disgusting to hear (read).

I look at it as long as people aren't like that now (and most that I deal with aren't) and we keep educating the ignorant then this world still has a chance at some happy folks living on it. Wars are fought by sides that often dehumanize the other, but if we can be educated enough to know that *everyone* wants the same things: happiness and love, then we've taken the first and biggest step towards a better world.

I wish you the very best in your endevour at educating the ignorant — I have noticed that some are not into knowing the truth, so you — as well as I — have your work cut out for yourself.

Good luck,

Todd Auvil
