Was Native Defeat Inevitable?
(6/26/00)

Another response to Was Native Defeat Inevitable?:

>> Culture? I won't argue it (to each their own). When it comes to technology, though, there's no comparison. In the 17th century, European technology was more advanced than any other. <<

European technology was superior at the beginning. One point is that Native people were clever enough to adopt or imitate this technology. And since the conquest took centuries even with disease, they would've had the time and energy to do so if illness hadn't weakened them.

Another point is that Native cultures were arguably superior in other ways, such as their use of "guerrilla" warfare tactics. The British redcoats found out how effective these tactics were when they went up against the ragtag Revolutionary army...as did the U.S. Army when it went up against Geronimo's band of Apaches.

A clearcut decision? I still don't see it.
