21-ring hoop dance
Hoop dreams
Rare dance form to kick off American Indian Heritage MonthTwenty one is a special number for a lot of college students, but for an American Indian hoop dancer, it can mean so much more.
"The more hoops a dancer is able to incorporate into their dance, the better they are as far as competition goes," Odawa White, retention coordinator and adviser for the UW-Eau Claire Native American Student Association, said. "If a dancer is just in exhibition, 21 hoops are pretty spectacular for someone to incorporate into a dance."
To kick off November's American Indian Heritage Month, 21-ring Hoop Dancer Crystal Norcross of the Fond du Lac Ojibwe Nation will hold a demonstration.
Norcross has traveled the United States telling stories through her 21-ring Hoop Dance. Below: A hoop dancer (not Crystal Norcross).
