Fighting stereotypes by exposing them
Holding a mirror up to racial stereotypesHow do you describe a Jewish guy?
"Stingy."
A black woman?
"Has a big butt."
An Irish dude?
"Drinks a lot, eats potatoes and beats his wife."
This isn't Michael "Kramer" Richards talking. These are our kids, trying to characterize types of people they know nothing about. These kids are in a Pine Bush School District program designed to fight stereotypes by shining a light on them. But they could be any kids in our region. Comment: We're doing the same basic thing here: shining a light on Native stereotypes. Or in the article's parlance:
How do you describe an Indian?
"Half-naked savage with feathers."
"Stingy."
A black woman?
"Has a big butt."
An Irish dude?
"Drinks a lot, eats potatoes and beats his wife."
