Lovejoy:  Homosexuality a choice

Homosexuality Becomes Issue In Navajo CampaignAt a forum in Albuquerque Lovejoy called homosexuality a birth defect.

“Some of our children are born with physical impairments, and it’s not the baby’s fault. … That person is special, that individual is special,” she said at the forum. “I feel the same way about sexual orientation: everyone is special.”

Later, when pressed by a local television station she suggested sexuality was a matter of choice.

“I respect everyone and that’s their choice, that’s their lifestyle they choose,” she said.

So, who won? The naturist or the nurturist? Native politics more and more resemble national 'issues' even though Natives mostly are so far from the mainstream, they must pack three weeks' rations and six sets of clothes when they want to express an opinion. Ten to one, Lovejoy is unmarried or didn't marry Navajo, is a Republican and has every Anita Bryant album autographed. Best of all, she believes she picked her parents. Oh, and she drives a minivan...

Okay, Joe Shirley, Jr., handily won a second term in the race with Lynda Lovejoy for Navajo Nation President. Shirley received 32,273 votes to Lovejoy's 27,997. Oddly, the most that can be found in print about Lynda Lovejoy is that she was a New Mexico state representative, currently serves on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, and has not lived on the Navajo Reservation proper for over 20 years. Otherwise, members of her staff had articles galore in New Mexico and Arizona newspapers, including tribal ones, trying to apologize for her remark about gayness and homosexuality. That factor, plus the item that Navajo traditionalists do not see themselves being led by a woman, may have led to her defeat.

I believe Lovejoy is married to a non-Indian. There was a fair amount of coverage of the race in the area's newspapers: the Gallup Independent, the Farmington Daily Times, and the Navajo Times.

The last time a woman ran for Navajo Nation President was in 1998, and she lost badly. Either one hardly could qualify as a Native Hillary Clinton. Whatever one may think of Hillary, or in fact Obama, Bill Clinton is going to find himself back in the White House in 2008 (2009?) and he can watch THE PRICE IS RIGHT in the Lincold bedroom in his underwear once again...

I doubt Hillary Clinton can get elected, but I'd rather have her than John McCain or any other Republican.

Of course, it will be the better part of two years from now before any of us knows what will occur. I am willing to take very large wagers. What sayeth you, and what wagereth you?

The safe bet for 2008 would be to go with the favorites: Clinton vs. McCain. But I'll guess that one or both of them won't be a nominee.
